A gift label where the buyer sets the link is the shortest useful smart-element product there is: one element, one field, done in twenty minutes. What takes the other twenty is making sure it scans, which is not the same as making sure it looks right.
Build it
Place the code
Add the QR element and make it larger than feels necessary. On a gift label the code competes with a small piece of card, and small codes are where scanning fails.
Set a working default
Point it at something real, such as your own shop page. Whatever you set is what prints if the shopper changes nothing, and a code pointing at a placeholder is a printed defect.
Make the link a field
In Personalize, switch on Customers can change this and label it in the shopper’s words, such as “Link for the label”. If the label is worthless without a link, mark it Required to order.
Keep the contrast
Dark code on a light background is the combination that scans everywhere. Recolouring a code is possible and it is where merchants break scanning without noticing.
Scan the printed proof
Print the label at its real size and scan it with an ordinary phone, in ordinary light. That is the only test that reflects a customer.
Decide these before you list it
That first row is the one worth pausing on. A QR code holding a plain message is fixed forever once it is printed. A QR code pointing at a page you control can be changed the day after, which turns a printing mistake into a five-minute fix.
Common questions
How big should the code be?
Larger than looks necessary. Print one at the real size and scan it from arm's length; if that works, it is big enough.
Can I make the code match my brand colours?
You can change its colours, and that is the usual way scanning breaks. Keep a dark code on a light background and test every variation.
What should the code point at?
Preferably a page you control, so you can change the destination later. A code carrying a message is permanent once printed.
The code stopped scanning after I resized it.
It is probably below the size paper needs. Increase it and reprint the test.
Can the shopper enter anything at all?
Set the rules on the field. If it must be a link, say so in the help text and check the proof before production.
