This guide explains how Composerie charges usage fees on the personalized items you sell. It is for merchants who want to understand what shows up on their Shopify bill and how personalized items are counted.
What a usage fee is
A usage fee is a charge for personalized items processed through Composerie. It is separate from your subscription. The subscription keeps your account active; the usage fee covers personalized items that move through your store.
The fee is usage-based. You pay for billable personalized items according to the terms approved in Shopify.
If the Shopify-approved terms include a future billing start date or trial period, Composerie follows those terms when deciding which items are billable. To see where those terms are approved, read approve Shopify billing.
Usage rates
The exact usage meter, rate, tiers, and caps are shown in Shopify before you approve billing. Composerie’s billing page mirrors the approved terms so you can see the current usage status.
If your approved terms include tiered usage, the rate changes as your volume moves through the approved bands. The Billing page shows the active band and the usage meter attached to your Shopify subscription.
You can see the live usage ladder and the band you are currently in on the billing page. Open Settings, then Billing, and find the Usage terms list. Your current band is marked with a Current badge and highlighted.
For a full walk-through of that screen, read the usage dashboard.
How items are counted
A billable item is a personalized item on a paid order, counted according to the Shopify-approved usage terms. Composerie counts an order line as personalized when it carries a saved design or was resolved through one of your published products. A plain product with no personalization is not counted as a Composerie usage item.
The same design with the same personalization on a single order counts once. If a shopper adds the exact same personalized item more than once on one order, you are billed for it a single time, even when it spans several lines. Composerie checks the personalization content to decide this, so identical designs are not double-counted.
Items outside the billable window shown in your Shopify-approved terms are not counted as billable Composerie usage.
To see how many of this period’s personalized items are billable, open Settings, then Billing, and look below the usage metric cards for the billable-items detail line. It shows the billable count alongside the total for the period.
Do refunded or cancelled orders still get billed?
Usage fees apply according to the Shopify-approved terms and the paid-order state. Check the billable-items detail line on the Billing page to confirm what was counted for the period.
Does adding the same personalized item twice on one order cost double?
No. The same design with the same personalization on a single order is billed once, even across multiple lines.
When do personalized items become billable?
Billing follows the subscription and usage terms approved in Shopify. The Billing page shows which items are billable for the current period.
If your billable count looks wrong for a period, contact support and we can review the usage with you.
