Publishing: What Stops It and How to Clear It

The publish button counts blockers, and there are only five kinds. Find yours in the family it belongs to instead of reading fourteen messages one at a time.

When publishing will not start, the screen tells you how many things to fix and then lists them. The list looks long because each variant can raise its own message, but there are only five kinds of problem underneath. This guide sorts them, so you fix a cause rather than a message.

Only blockers hold the button

Warnings are advice. Blockers are the count on the button.

The validation summary groups issues by severity. The button is disabled while any blocker stands and its tooltip says how many are left, so the number on the button is your to-do count. Warnings are worth reading before you sell, and they do not stop you.

The five families

Fourteen messages, five causes.

Product photos

The most common family, and the one that clears itself if you wait. A photo that is still rendering is not a fault; validate again in a minute.

The rest need you: a failed photo has to be retried in Mockups, a stale one regenerated because it shows an earlier design or placement, and a missing one chosen for every active variant. One message asks you to save a new design revision with its fonts before repairing the photos, and that order matters: repairing first will just fail again.

Prices and costs

Composerie refuses to publish a variant that would sell for free, and it names the variant so you do not have to hunt. Set a price above zero on every sellable variant.

For variants you buy in from a provider, the check also wants a provider cost above zero and a valid three-letter currency for it, because without those the margin figures on the order would be meaningless. If it asks you to reconnect the store so its currency can be verified, that is a Shopify connection problem rather than a pricing one.

Two messages here, and both mean the output file would be wrong rather than just ugly. Invalid dimensions mean the surface size does not produce a usable file. Beyond the safety limit means the render would be enormous; the message includes the pixel size it worked out, which tells you how far over you are.

Both are fixed on the side in the Design Studio, not in the publication. See manage a product’s sides.

Provider bindings

The message about unique native provider file slots is the one that looks most obscure and has the clearest meaning: a shopper-personalized mode needs to know which provider slot each placement belongs to. A missing or duplicated binding makes that ambiguous, so it is refused rather than guessed.

You have two ways out. Repair the bindings so each placement has its own slot, or publish in Linked mode, which does not personalize on the storefront and therefore does not need them. See choose Linked, Embedded or Full page.

The revision

If the active publication revision cannot be verified, republish the product to create a fresh one. Nothing is lost; the check exists so an order is never bound to a revision Composerie cannot read.

When publishing starts and then fails

A push can also fail after validation passes, and those messages name the step: pushing the product to Shopify, importing its variants, or the push not finishing in time.

Retry once. A timeout that repeats is worth reporting with the product and the time, because it is usually about the store rather than the product.

Also check the obvious one first: publishing needs an active plan, and a lapsed one gives its own message about billing. See what happens if billing is not approved.

Common questions

Validation passed yesterday and blocks today.

Something changed underneath, usually a new design revision that made the product photos stale. Regenerate them in Mockups.

Can I publish with warnings?

Yes. Only blockers disable the button. Read the warnings first, because they are the things that are legal but probably not what you meant.

The blocker names a variant I do not sell.

The check covers every active variant. Deactivate the ones you do not sell rather than pricing them.

Why does a personalized mode need provider file slots?

Because production has to know which file each placement becomes. If two placements claim the same slot, the answer is ambiguous, and an ambiguous print file is worse than a refused publish.

I published, and my store shows nothing.

That is a different problem: the product is out there and the customizer is not showing. See changes are not showing.
