Refunds and Cancellations: Who Is Out of Pocket

A refund returns the money and does not undo what has already been made. Which of the five ways a personalized sale comes apart leaves you out of pocket, and the order to do things in so it hurts less.

A personalized item cannot be resold. That single fact is what makes a cancellation different here from a cancellation on a stock product, and it is why the order you do things in matters more than usual. This guide covers the money. For the buttons, see cancel and refund an order.

The five ways it comes apart

Only one line here is genuinely cheap, and it is the one with a deadline on it.

Cancelled before making started. The best case. Your provider has not charged you, so the only spend is anything the shopper’s design already consumed, such as AI generations.

Refunded after making started. The expensive one. You have bought an item that cannot be sold to anyone else, and the shopper has their money back. See what your print provider charges you for when that moment falls at each provider.

Designed and left. No sale, no order, no usage. If the design used AI, those generations were billed the moment the shopper ran them. See what AI generation costs.

Handoff never accepted. Nothing a provider never took can appear on their bill, but the shopper has paid you and still expects the item. Fix the handoff or refund; do not leave it.

Shipped, then returned. A print-on-demand provider does not take a personalized item back into stock. Decide your own returns policy for personalized goods before you need one.

The order that costs less

Stop the making before you return the money, not after.

Cancellation requests may fail after production starts; confirm provider status and charges.

A refunded order is never proof that the provider stopped production; check provider charges.

What to tell the shopper

Do not promise a full refund before you know what the item cost you. The honest sequence is to say you will check, check, and come back with an answer, which takes minutes and avoids promising money you have already spent.

For a self-print order the calculation is yours alone, so decide the cut-off yourself: usually the moment the sheet goes on the press.

Common questions

Can I cancel an order from inside Composerie?

The financial action happens in Shopify, where the payment was taken. Composerie links you to that order and follows once the event arrives.

I refunded the shopper. Did production stop?

Not on its own. Check the provider's own dashboard, and cancel there separately if the item is still queued.

Does Shopify give me back its payment processing fee?

That is Shopify's policy on the refund, not something Composerie controls. Check the refund in Shopify's own reporting.

The shopper wants a change, not a refund.

Editing the design does not change a placed order, because it keeps its own revision. Cancel and re-order, or fulfill it by hand if nothing has started.

Do I have to accept returns on personalized items?

That depends on your own policy and the consumer law where you sell. Personalized goods are often excluded from a standard right of return, but check the rules for your market rather than assuming.
