What your print provider charges you

Your print provider bills your own account with them, not Composerie. Here is what Send to production actually does, when the charge lands, and where to find it.

When a personalized order is fulfilled by Printify, Printful or MerchOne, that provider charges you for production and shipping. This guide shows you what triggers that charge, when it lands, and where to see the amount. It is for any merchant using a connected print provider.

The one sentence to take away: Composerie never pays your provider. The provider bills your own account with them, using the payment method you set up in their dashboard.

When a provider confirms acceptance, Composerie can record its order id, quoted cost, and dispatch time for merchant review.

What Send to production actually does

Their rules decide when making starts, and you are charged then.

After the merchant clicks Send to production for an eligible mapped order, verify the provider id and status before treating the handoff as accepted.

What happens after that is not the same at every provider, and this is the part worth reading twice:

  • Printful treats the release as a confirmed submission. Work can begin and your Wallet can be charged without a further step from you.
  • Printify places the item in your account and leaves it to your own approval setting there.

So do not assume a release is free. Check your provider’s dashboard whenever you expect something to have begun, and read their billing page once before your first real sale.

Printify

Printify keeps its own approval setting, and it decides both when work begins and when your card or balance is charged. It lives in Printify’s dashboard, not in Composerie. This is the provider where a released item can sit untouched for a while.

Read Printify’s store details and order approval settings for the setting itself, and their payments, billing and taxes section for how and when they take payment.

To find an item in Printify, use the provider id shown in the Production section.

Printful

Printful bills through the Printful Wallet, which you fund by topping it up yourself or by auto-recharge from a card or PayPal when the balance runs low.

Unlike Printify, a release to Printful is a confirmed submission, so treat the moment you release it as the moment you have bought the item. Keep the Wallet funded before you release anything.

Read Printful’s how the Printful billing system works and what the Printful Wallet is.

MerchOne

MerchOne bills your MerchOne account on the terms of that account. Read docs.merchone.com for their setup and billing behavior; your account lives in the MerchOne dashboard.

Self-print orders

There is no provider charge on a self-print order. The item stays with your team, so your cost is your own materials, labour and postage, and nothing appears on a provider bill.

Where Composerie shows the cost

Open the order and check the Production section for the recorded amount, so you can read it beside the sale.

Two things to know about that number:

  • Recorded, not charged. It is a copy of the provider’s own figure, kept so you can compare cost against sale without opening another dashboard.
  • In the provider’s billing currency. Composerie does not convert it, so an order priced in one currency can show a cost in another. Compare like with like before reading a margin off it.

The authoritative figure is always the one on your provider’s own invoice.

Cancelling before you are charged

The charge point also decides what a cancellation costs you.

Before making starts a cancellation is free. After it, you have already bought the item.

Cancellation requests may fail after production starts; confirm provider status and charges.

A refund does not guarantee provider cancellation and may still incur production charges.

How wide that window is depends on the provider. With Printful it can be almost nothing, because the release is already a confirmed submission. So when a shopper asks to cancel, check their dashboard before you promise anything. See cancel and refund an order for the Composerie side.

I released an item but nothing seems to be happening.

Open your provider's dashboard using the provider id from the Production section and check their approval setting. On Printify an item can wait there until that setting lets work begin. On Printful a release is already a confirmed submission, so if nothing is moving there, check the Wallet balance instead.

Can I pay my provider through Composerie?

No. Your provider bills the payment method on your own account with them. Composerie has no access to it and never handles that money.

Why is the recorded cost in a different currency from the sale?

Composerie records the provider's invoiced amount in the provider's own billing currency and does not convert it. Convert before comparing it against a sale in another currency.

A handoff failed. Was I charged?

Check your provider dashboard: a charge follows their approval setting, so nothing they never accepted can be billed. See handle fulfillment errors for how to recover it.

Do I get charged twice if I retry a failed order?

Retry in the Production section retries a failed render; it does not resubmit a provider handoff. Before submitting anything by hand at the provider, check whether an order for it is already there.
