Charge Extra for Personalization

Four different places can add money to one personalized item, and they stack. Here is where each lives, how it reaches the cart, and where the margin shows up afterwards.

Personalization is worth money to a shopper, and Composerie gives you four separate ways to charge for it. They are in four different screens, they stack rather than replace each other, and only one of them warns you when you have priced it at nothing. This guide covers the money side. For setting add-ons up, see add-ons.

The four places extra money attaches

Four screens, one total. Nothing here overrides anything else.

Add-on choices are the usual one. Each choice has a provider cost and a price you set, and Composerie shows the difference. On the product page they sit in the Add-ons card, where you open an add-on and click a choice’s price to edit it. That is the one place to change prices: the Design Studio’s Options panel lists the same choices with their prices, and links back to the product page to change them.

Merchant add-ons are extras your own team supplies rather than the provider: gift wrap, a rush service, a hanger. You create them from the product page and price them as a Fixed amount, charged once per item, or as a Percentage, calculated from the selected variant price.

Fields and graphics are the two that surprise people, because they are set in a different part of the product. A field can carry a surcharge for being answered, and a single graphic in your media library can carry one of its own. See let a shopper pick a graphic.

How the money reaches the order

Priced while you build, signed at checkout, frozen on the order.

Two consequences worth holding on to.

An old order keeps old prices. Cost, sale and margin are recorded on the item when the order arrives. Reprice the add-on tomorrow and yesterday’s order still reads yesterday’s numbers, which is what makes a margin report over time meaningful.

A mismatch stops production rather than printing it. The surcharge total is signed on the cart line. If what arrives does not match, the order is flagged Add-on review instead of going to production, and you confirm it by hand. See how the cart interceptor works.

Where to read whether it worked

The order’s Summary card shows Add-on margin underneath the total when priced extras were chosen.

For the pattern rather than one sale, the analytics Add-on economics panel shows Attach rate, Add-on revenue and Add-on margin, with a list of the options shoppers picked most often underneath. Attach rate is the number to watch: a well-priced extra that nobody picks is worth less than a cheaper one most shoppers take.

Common questions

Do a field surcharge and a graphic surcharge both apply?

Yes. They add together, so a field with a percentage surcharge and a graphic with a fixed one charge both amounts.

Why does my add-on margin read as zero?

The sale price is probably empty, which falls back to the provider cost. Set a price above the cost, or use Reset all to cost deliberately if selling at cost is what you want.

I repriced an add-on. Why does an old order still show the old margin?

Cost, sale and margin are frozen on the item at order time, so historical reporting survives a price change. New orders use the new price.

What does Add-on review mean on an order?

The surcharge that arrived did not match the signed amount from the cart. Check the selected add-ons against what was charged before you fulfill it.

Does a percentage add-on follow a price change?

It is calculated from the selected variant price, so raising the variant price raises the add-on with it on future sales.
