Set Pricing and Inventory

Control how a product is priced and stocked: cost, price, and margin per variant, a compare-at price, your inventory mode, VAT, and what happens when a variant sells out.

This guide shows you how to price and stock a personalizable product in Composerie. You set cost and price on each variant, decide how stock is tracked, set your VAT, and choose what happens when a variant sells out. It is for merchants who already have a product with variants and want to get the money side right before publishing.

The product page’s Catalog section contains the variant table. Product-wide inventory and tax settings sit behind Settings in its footer. Inline edits stage for the page savebar.

Cost, price, and margin

Each variant has its own Cost and Price. You edit both inline, in the variants table. Click the value, type the new amount, and it stages your change until you save.

Cost is what the variant costs you. For a print-on-demand product, that is usually the price your print provider charges. Price is what the shopper pays. To learn how variants are built in the first place, see variants and options.

The Margin column sits to the right of the price columns. Composerie calculates it for you from the cost and price you enter, and it is read-only. It shows a percentage with the money amount underneath. The margin is coloured only when it needs a look: amber below 30%, red for a loss.

Type cost and price straight into the row. The margin updates on its own.

If you want to show a higher “was” price next to the current price, turn on Compare-at price in the settings (covered below). When it is on, a Compare column appears in the variants table, and you can fill in the original price per variant. The Margin column always reflects cost against the real price you charge, not the compare-at figure.

Inventory, tax, and sold-out behavior

Select Settings in the Catalog footer to review inventory mode, tax, compare-at and sold-out settings. These saved settings do not by themselves prove the resulting stock or tax behavior in Shopify checkout.

Open Catalog settings

On the product page, find Catalog and select Settings in its footer. The Catalog settings popover contains the product-wide pricing and inventory settings.

Choose an inventory mode

In the Inventory row, pick how stock is tracked:

  • PoD ∞ (print on demand): the table treats these rows as untracked stock. An infinity indicator is not a guarantee that the provider can fulfill every variant.
  • Custom: use tracked quantities for variants you stock. Verify the actual inventory update and checkout behavior before relying on automatic stock reduction.
  • Hybrid: a mix, where some variants track stock and others do not.

Most print-on-demand stores stay on PoD ∞. Choose Custom or Hybrid only if you hold real stock for some variants. On those two, a Stock column row appears with a switch that shows or hides the stock column in the variants table.

Set your VAT

The Tax row exposes a tax toggle, VAT-rate presets and Prices incl. VAT. Save the intended values, then verify the published product and Shopify checkout separately. Do not assume that switching this control overrides Shopify’s tax configuration.

Choose what happens when a variant sells out

The When stock = 0 row sets the sold-out behavior:

  • Sold out: the variant is shown but marked as sold out, so shoppers cannot buy it.
  • Hide: the variant disappears from the storefront until it is back in stock.
  • Continue: keep selling even at zero stock.

This row only applies once stock is tracked, so it is available on Custom and Hybrid. On PoD ∞ there is no quantity to hit zero, so the setting is greyed out.

Save with the page save bar

Your changes stage as you make them. Nothing is live yet. When you are done, use the save bar at the bottom of the product page to write everything in one go. After saving, update the intended publication and check the actual storefront and checkout result.

A short line in the Catalog footer, next to Settings, sums up your current setup, for example “VAT 21% incl. · Print on demand”. It adds whether the stock column is shown when you track stock, the purchase currency when provider costs are in another currency than the product, and “Compare-at on” when that is turned on. Glance at it to confirm the mode, VAT, and compare-at state without reopening the popover.

Common questions

Why is the Margin column read-only?

Composerie calculates it from recorded cost and price. Check the cost currency and any missing or approximate conversion indication; it is not a complete profit calculation.

I do not see a Compare column. Where is it?

The Compare column only appears when the Compare-at price toggle is on. Select Settings in the Catalog footer and turn it on.

Why is the sold-out setting greyed out?

Print on demand does not track a finite quantity in this table, so the setting is disabled. Custom or Hybrid enables the control; verify the actual inventory and checkout behavior for the product.

What does the infinity symbol in the Stock column mean?

It marks a variant that uses provider stock rather than a tracked quantity. It does not guarantee provider availability. Hybrid can mix tracked and provider-stock rows.

Do prices include tax automatically?

Review Prices incl. VAT in Catalog settings, then verify the published price and Shopify checkout. A saved Composerie toggle alone does not prove how Shopify calculated tax.

If changes are missing, check both the save result and the intended publication update before refreshing the storefront. Include the variant, store and exact result when contacting support.
